Chapter I · The Student Leader

The Student Leader

President of the Sudanese Students' Union in the United Kingdom (1982-84), President of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies in the United Kingdom (1984-86), then Secretary-General of the International Islamic Federation of Student Organizations (1988-92). From these student leadership experiences the political and leading character of Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail emerged and matured — a man who would become one of the leading figures in politics, diplomacy, academic research and university teaching.

Chapter II · The Secretary-General

Secretary-General of the Council of International People's Friendship

He founded the Council of International People's Friendship and became its first Secretary-General with the rank of Minister of State. Through that period, 1991-1996, he served his apprenticeship in the art of regional and international relations.

Chapter III · The Minister of State

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs

Appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in February 1996, where he gained wide experience in international questions and in Sudan's external relations. He held the post for two years before moving from it into the heart of the Foreign Ministry.

Chapter IV · The Foreign Minister

The Foreign Minister

Appointed Foreign Minister at a moment of isolation, he held the post for seven years, the longest tenure in Sudan’s history. He contributed substantial effort to the negotiations that ended Africa’s longest civil war, receiving Kofi Annan and Tony Blair in Khartoum and pressing Sudan’s case from New York to Tokyo.

Chapter V · The Peacemaker

The Peacemaker

After the 2005 peace agreement, in the first major cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed Advisor to the President of the Republic, a post he held from 2006 to 2012, and later Minister of Investment. He led the government delegation through the Eastern Sudan talks, which produced one of the most successful internal peace agreements in Sudan’s history. As the Arab League’s special envoy he went to Lebanon in 2006, to Iraq in 2007 and to Palestine, alongside continued engagement with the Darfur peace process.

The Ambassador

Ambassador of Sudan to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva (2016-2019), representing his country before the Human Rights Council at the Palais des Nations.

The Professor

Professor and Director of the MA Program in Islam and Global Affairs at the College of Islamic Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, since 2021; Senior Advisor at UNITAR; a second doctorate in International Relations, a visiting fellowship at Oxford, and more than twenty books.

He served as Sudan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Sudan's ambassador to the United Nations and Switzerland, and took part in numerous regional and international initiatives and dialogues.
